Military Tuition Options

Veterans and service members, as well as their eligible dependents and spouses, who have served on active duty for 90 days or more since September 10, 2001 are eligible for the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill®.

Getting Started for Military Personnel and Spouses

A part of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill®, the Yellow Ribbon Program covers education-related costs for students attending participating higher educational institutions.

The Montgomery G.I. Bill® is a military benefit for eligible active duty service members and veterans (MGIB-AD/Chapter 30) and eligible selected reservists (MGIB-SR) administered through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you’re currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, your Education Office is an excellent resource to learn more about benefits due to you.

Veterans and Active Duty service members who have applied to and have been determined eligible through the Veterans Benefits Administration may receive Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) service benefits. Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws or stops attending, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded. CLU will return any unearned TA funds on a proportional basis to comply with Department of Defense policy. TA funds are earned proportionally, during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending. Any CLU balance due to a TA return is the responsibility of the student.

VETERANS BENEFITS INFORMATION

Veterans who didn’t serve on active duty for more than 36 months aren’t eligible for 100% of the Post-9/11 GI Bill ®. The Post-9/11 GI Bill® pro-rates your allowances based on the amount of time you did serve on active duty, whereas the Montgomery GI Bill® allows veterans to make a lump-sum contribution to close the gap between their time served and 100-percent eligibility requirements.

For veterans who separated prior to Jan. 1, 2013, Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits expire 15 years after separation, but the “Forever GI Bill®” passed in 2017 removed this limitation for service members separating after Jan. 1, 2013.

It’s important to remember that the Post-9/11 GI Bill® offers financial assistance with tuition, fees, housing, books, and supplies in many cases.

ACTIVE DUTY BENEFITS INFORMATION

Active Duty personnel in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, or Navy may be eligible for Tuition Assistance (TA). Because each branch has its own application process and criteria for eligibility, please contact your duty station’s Education Office to learn more about your available benefits.

Service members can also use the Post-9/11 GI Bill®or the Montgomery GI Bill®to pay for tuition. The Post-9/11 GI Bill® offers students more financial assistance than the MGIB, especially when pursuing a standard, four-year degree at an accredited higher learning institution or passing your benefits to a dependent in most cases. The Montgomery GI Bill® breaks down into two types: MGIB Active Duty & MGIB Selected Reserve (for members of the reserve and National Guard forces). 

SPOUSE AND DEPENDENT BENEFITS INFORMATION

If you’re a spouse or dependent, you’re eligible to receive tuition benefits through the GI Bill®based on availability from your spouse or parent. For more information on the transfer of benefits, please see the link below. If you’re a spouse, you may also want to consider applying for the MyCAA Scholarship, which provides up to $4,000 of tuition assistance to eligible military spouses at select institutions.

CLU offers a 10% Military Tuition Discount for military service members, veterans, and their families.

Yes, CLU works to maximize academic credit for military service through both Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) for transcribed units and Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) for work experience and training.

The online GI Bill Monthly Housing Allowance is $1,054.50 for the 2023-2024 academic year.

The online GI Bill BAH Rate calculation takes half of the national BAH Rate average. This applies when attending online courses exclusively.

Yes, for current Graduate students only and CLU has no cap on its Yellow Ribbon Program, making up for costs not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill®.

Earning Academic Credit for Your Service

By providing us your Joint Service Transcript (JST), we can review your training and prior learning to award you academic credit. This enables you to earn a degree in less time and with less total expense.​ We can offer you a free review of your JST or CCAF transcripts so you can get a sense for how many credits you’ll earn based on your experience in the military.
