– Graduating Student Makes Social Impact with Community Engaged Law Enforcement Capstone Action Project –

CLAREMONT, Calif., May 10, 2019 — Claremont Lincoln University, an online by design graduate university honored student, Leslie Harrell, with the David and Joan Lincoln Student Changemaker award during the university’s Gathering and Commencement weekend in Claremont, California.  In a unanimous decision based on committee review, faculty and student recommendations, Leslie was selected for her outstanding work in the community as well as her inspiring educational journey. The David and Joan Lincoln Student Changemaker award is presented to a graduating student who has achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher with recommendations from faculty and students.

“Leslie is the true embodiment of a Claremont Lincoln University student, and we exist because of students like her,” said Joseph Sallustio, CLU COO.  “She exemplifies compassion, integrity, and service—values that are incorporated within our core beliefs.  As it turns out, she has been making sustainable social change even long before her enrollment at CLU.”

Harrell has dedicated her Capstone Action Project entitled, “Community Engaged Law Enforcement: Working Together to Bring About Change” to unifying both community members and law enforcement officials to improve the community’s trust in local law enforcement.  Through collaborative dialogue meetings, she has created awareness for and has mounted change in the perceptions of law enforcement within communities of color. On May 16th, she has arranged a “Neighborhood Meet & Greet” in partnership with the Visible Men Academy, an all-boys charter school in East Bradenton, Florida.  Similar to previous meetings, this community forum will bring together residents, business owners, and community agencies to discuss ways they could further engage with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Harrell has attributed the positive outcomes of her Capstone Project to the Claremont Core ®, a sequence of courses in Mindfulness, Dialogue, Collaboration and Change from Claremont Lincoln.  Harrell is currently one term away from completing her master’s degree in the M.A. in Peace and Social Justice program at CLU.  CLU provides Socially Conscious Education™ for those seeking to ignite positive impact within their families, organizations and communities.
