California has always been the home of innovation, from Walt Disney to Apple Computers. Since the beginning of the new century, it’s also been an incubator for social enterprises, thanks in part to two legally-sanctioned types of social enterprise structure.

SIRUM (Supporting Initiatives to Redistribute Unused Medicine)
- Founded: 2009
- Mission: Rescue unused medicines from healthcare systems and redistribute to clinics that serve low-income patients, reducing waste.
- Successes: 200 partners working with the program in California and Colorado, plus funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (among others)

- Founded: 1971
- Mission: As stated on their website, they are country’s leading residential self-help organization for former substance abusers, ex-convicts, and more.
