In this course students will gain an understanding of the principles of urban sustainability, global frameworks for sustainability, and how to apply them to specific cities and surrounding metro regions to understand why cities exist and how they grow. Through analyzing real world case studies that profile the challenges and sustainable solutions of specific cities, students will acquire the knowledge and skills to diagnose urban challenges, design interventions to make cities sustainable, and mobilize resources to implement them.
This course equips students with a planning process that will enable them to create responsive plans that can anticipate and adapt to unexpected changes. A variety of case studies from a variety of cities around the world will supplement the learning experience.
In this course, students will learn how cities manage space, its different uses, and at different scales – local, regional, and mega regions, with sustainable human habitation and care for planet Earth. Tools such as GPS, remote sensing, and geofencing that support geographic mapping of the earth will be utilized in this course.
